Requirements for Volunteering
- You must be 18 years of age or older
- You must be willing to submit a police criminal record check. The potential volunteer must not have a criminal record
- Attend bi-monthly volunteer meetings
- Commit to a minimum of one year of volunteer activity
- Be willing to sign up for a minimum of three shifts per month
- Crisis response volunteers must have use of a car and possess a valid driver's license with sufficient auto insurance
- Should your application be approved, Victim Services is unable to provide a written letter of reference until you have volunteered for one year
What Do Crisis Support Volunteers Do?
The role of the crisis support volunteer is to respond to a crisis situation and provide:
- Emotional support and a listening ear to those involved
- Reassurance and comfort
- Information about court and the criminal justice system
- Information on services available in the community for follow-up and longer term support
- Practical assistance
All training is provided. Volunteer training is mandated by the Ministry of the Attorney General and consists of a minimum of 40 hours. Training normally takes place in the spring of each year.
This is a very flexible volunteer opportunity, with shifts available days, evenings and weekends. Our shifts consist of 8am-5pm and 5pm-8am, 7 days per week.
